I never use hop bags, I just let it settle and am carefull with the racking cane. I am assuming that you are using a glass fermenter, if not I would suggest it, it makes seeing what you are doing alot easier. Another thing that I noticed is that when using the pellets, they tend to breakup into a fine mush, so I'm not sure that using a bag would be helpfull anyway.

I just put my first batch into the fermentor and during boiling I had my hop bag with pellets open up into the brew ...doh!. At which point, and how, should I strain out that hop sediment? or should I just let it settle and just be careful about transfer to secondary fermentation???

thanks,
